Museum and culture
An exhibition space has to let the work speak and disappear itself. At the same time there is equipment overhead: spots, cabling, air ducts. And often all of it sits in a building where nothing may change structurally.

Equipment out of sight
A stretched sheet lays one calm surface over everything hanging above it, and stays demountable, so you can still reach the equipment. It puts no extra load on the existing structure, which in a listed building is the difference between allowed and not allowed.
In Huis Roodenburch in Dordrecht, one of the oldest stone houses in the city, that is why SPANdesign put a stretch ceiling into the cooking area of the wine cellar.
Light as the work itself
Because the sheet passes light, the light can sit behind it. At De Kuyper Royal Distillers in Schiedam the dynamically coloured light panels in the cocktail bar are the interior element themselves, in a nationally listed building.
For the Biënnale Brabant in Tilburg, twelve cylinders of translucent material with RGB LED lighting formed the entrance grove of the exhibition, and the glass pavilion was clad inside and out with white gloss foil.

What usually goes in here
- Light fittings and objectsLight behind the sheet, or an object hung free. The ceiling becomes the light source.
- Stretched wallsThe same technique turned vertical. It covers an old or uneven wall and works on the acoustics at the same time.
- Stretch ceilingA made-to-measure sheet pulled taut across the whole room. No seams, no ceiling tiles working loose.

Common questions about this room
What are the design options?
Our stretch solutions have countless applications across all kinds of styles. The number of shapes is unlimited: horizontal, vertical, curved, angled and 3D. There is a wide choice of colour and pattern, and the systems come in many versions.
Can lighting be integrated?
Yes. Light fittings can be integrated into a SPANdesign stretch ceiling. Transparent and light-transmitting ceilings give diffuse light. The light ceilings reach around 76% light transmission and suit fluorescent fittings, LED modules and projection.
How stable is it?
SPANdesign stretched products suit spanning larger surfaces. No extra load is placed on the existing structure, and the elastic, lightweight material returns to its original state after deformation.
What does modular mean?
Our stretch solutions can be taken down and put back up without limit. They combine with lighting, climate control and sprinkler systems. All our stretch products are flexible and shatterproof, are fitted at minimal depth, and are made to measure for each individual room.
How large can a single sheet be?
Up to roughly 50 m² we make a ceiling from one sheet. Larger surfaces are divided into panels. All foils are available with different perforations, and all our products have been tested by TNO to fire class 1.
What does a stretch ceiling cost, roughly?
Most projects we take on are between 20,000 and 50,000 euro, and large halls and swimming pools run to 100,000 to 250,000 euro. What your room costs depends on its area, its shape and what has to sit in the ceiling. We do not take on a project under 20,000 euro.
